ISSUES IN THE INTERFACE BETWEEN BSL AND EDUCATION

The Committee for Linguistics in Education opens part of its regular meetings to non-members who are interested in issues relating to linguistics and education. At our next open session on Wednesday 19th February we are very pleased to welcome as our visiting speaker Professor Bencie Woll, Chair of Sign Language and Deaf Studies, City University. The talk will take place at 4-5pm in Committee Room 1 (Level 4), The Institute of Education, 20 Bedford Way, London You are very welcome to come. Abstract:

This talk will begin with a brief review of the history of the relationship between sign language and the education of deaf children, and will then outline the issues which are of current interest in the sign language field, including sign language acquisition, assessment of BSL, bilingual (BSL/English) approaches to education; literacy within bilingualism, teacher skills, BSL/English communication support workers and interpreters, etc. Participants will also be provided with a short bibliography of relevant materials.
